Galette des Rois

Galette des Rois La Boulangerie

A king cake is a cake associated in many countries with Epiphany. In France, we call it Galette des Rois or and it is a traditional cake made with layers of puff pastry and delicious frangipane (almond cream) inside.

Dating back to the Middle Ages, there was a tradition, similar to today's, where a bean was hidden in a galette. This was used to choose the "king of the day" in the Middle Ages, this activity became associated with Epiphany. Today, our traditional cake instead of the bean (yuppie) contains a lucky charm (une fèves). Whoever finds it in their slice of cake becomes King or Queen for the day!

Charms from La Boulangerie de San Francisco

We created a series of super cute custom handmade charms. each whole galette comes with one surprise charm and one crown. It’s an invitation to gather, as much party game as pastry – if your slice has the fève, you get the crown and the right to be king or queen for the day.

A Galette des Rois is made of an irresistibly creamy almond filling sandwiched between two flaky, buttery layers of puff pastry. The ingredients for almond cream all go into a food processor to blend, and then the paste is spread onto store-bought puff pastry, making this impressive cake simple to put together.
